Twenty plus kilometres away Judy and I visited Heronswood Gardens & Nursery - Dromana, Victoria Australia. If you’re curious you may like to read the history and/or architectural components of Heronswood Garden.

I feel fortunate to have visited this location on numerous occasions and witnessed artists’ painting and sketching the rare and unusual trees, shrubs, vines and perennials.

The homestead was constructed in 1871 from locally quarried coursed, squared and rare green granite blocks from the original Arthurs Seat run
William Edward Hearn (1826-1888) built Heronswood House as a retreat. It is said that ‘The Efforts to Satisfy Human Wants’ was written at Heronswood.

Another day… another beaut location, this time in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria where on my map, the Alfred Nicholas Gardens appeared. Dear friend, Andrea had mentioned this garden and as I was early for my meetup it was a heartwarming opportunity to walk and appreciate a portion of the 13 hectares.

The Mountain Ash trees are breathtaking
Nature took me by surprise with this fine specimen… Can you envisage what was once the fronds of a tree fern growing through the trunk of a tree?
The ornamental Lake is a beautiful spot to reflect
Just as the heritage manor is a zig-zag of rooms (empty, derelict and closed to the public), so too does the garden reflect its form… when walking down down down one must then go up up up; a picturesque workout.

The gardens were built in 1929 as part of Alfred Nicholas' Burnham Beeches Estate. Alfred Nicholas was a merchant and philantropist (1881-1937).

What gardens have you visited recently?

Maybe you have or are in the process of establishing your own garden.

My surprise news is still coming!

Until soon, may all of our meanderings into nature’s domain see us appreciate all that we are and have come here to be. It is a joy to walk together!
